Last week we did something a little different & drank wine from a can AND a box! We gathered with Princess & the Pinot & Amelia Singer for 'Wines Unpacked’ a virtual forum on the different wine packaging formats with producers & industry experts including…

Canned Wine Co Quality wine in cans, enabling you to drink less but better

When in Rome Italian craft wine in a box

Little Fine Wine Company Fine wine in half bottles, started by Victoria Stephens-Clarkson MW

The Bib Wine Company Fine wine in bag in box

Nania’s Vineyard English craft wine in can from a Bristol allotment vineyard

Miss Vicky Wine Crowd-funding to produce a Beaujolais Cru in a can

Nomadica Sommelier curated wine in can

Stanlake Park English producer selling their Pinot Noir rosé in magnums

Robert Joseph a wine consultant who believes the wine industry needs to move on from its reliance on cork & the generic 750ml glass bottle, a format based on “the lung capacity of a 17th century French glass blower”!

A fascinating session, most definitely aimed at those who want to learn more behind the bottle, glass, can or box! Although you could pose questions to the panel, this was more of a watch & learn session. A different experience to the more interactive gatherings but just as informative & very enjoyable.

The verdict!

There’s a format for every occasion. Cans for a picnic or train journey, BIB for everyday drinking, magnums for fun, or a special occasion.

For me, there’s no replacement for opening a glass bottle of fine wine, hearing that cork pop & the wonderful glugging sound as it pours into a glass!

What we learnt

  • Boxed wine keeps fresh for up to 6 weeks

  • Corks have a 1% failure rate

  • Sauvignon Blanc doesn’t work in a can, it reacts with the liner & gives it a metallic taste

  • Bag in box was originally created for battery acid

  • Glass bottles use 10 x more energy to recycle than bag in box.

The wine

Made in Rome

£25.99 - 2.25 litres (3 x regular bottles) bag in box
🍇 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
This is a delicious, easy drinking wine that is perfect to dip into mid-week, when you don’t want to open a whole bottle. Gather with a pizza.

Canned Wine Co

£33.49 for 6 x cans…

🍇 Gruner Veltliner
Refreshing with a lovely spicy finish
Gather with friends in the park.

🍇 Touriga Nacional
Fruity but with a slight bitterness - we poured ours but Simon (founder) recommends swigging it straight from the can! Gather at the end of the day when you don’t want to open a whole bottle.
