Roman Holiday with Borough Wines

Last week we jumped on a Vespa for a Roman Holiday with Borough Wines. We wish! In truth, it was a virtual event visiting some of the key wine regions of Italy, via 6 wines cleverly decanted into 200 ml glass bottles & crown-capped. Perfect for two people tasting!

An educational session, focussing more on how to taste than the regions themselves, so this would suit those new to wine tastings. A lot of thought had gone into this tasting, there were specially created tasting mats, with details on each of the wines (the only thing missing was the price) a handy glossary of common wine terms & an aroma & flavour chart to help get ‘creative (grape) juices flowing’!

A super-social gathering, with our charming & knowledgeable host, Julie bringing each household in to the chat asking lots of questions, with great interaction from those gathered!

What we learnt

Too much to mention! When you’re tasting wine & trying to decide the level of acidity, take a sip, swallow (or use a spittoon), put your head down for around 7 seconds - if your mouth starts to drip, the acidity level is high!

The wine

Conte di Alari Gavi, 2019
Region: Piedmont
£16.00
🍇 Cortese
Refreshing & very easy to drink! Gather with friends for an aperitif

Chiusa Grande Tommolo Chardonnay, 2019
Region: Abruzzo
£13.00
🍇 Chardonnay
Crisp, appley & slightly savoury. Gather with some grilled fish

Silvio Morando Bastardo, 2019
Region: Piedmont
£15.50
🍇 Syrah / Cortese
An unusual rosé, which divided gatherers. A natural wine made from organic grapes and indigenous yeasts, unfiltered and unfined. Dry & slightly yeasty, with a gentle spritz on the finish. Gather with some crudities or tapas.

Lambrusco La Battagliola, Dosage 15, 2019
Region: Modena
£15.00
🍇 Lambrusco Grasparossa
Not the sweet fizzy red from the 70s (as a couple of gatherers remarked!) this one is slightly drier & definitely more palatable. Gather with some Parma ham.

Ponteviro Primitivo IGT, 2017
Region: Puglia
£17.00
🍇 Primitivo
Delicious with jammy black fruit
Gather with anything with sweet spices or a small square of chocolate, as recommended by our host, Julie!

Villa Martino Barolo, 2014
⭐️ wine of the gathering
Region: Piedmont
£30.00
🍇 Nebbiolo
A good entry level Barolo in taste & price - Barolo has to be aged for 3 years & reaches its prime after 10. Elegant with violets, spice & herbs. Gather with roast duck.
