We joined wine expert, Mike Turner, live via Zoom to explore the wines of one of the most fascinating islands in the world; Sicily, along with three superb wines from specialist Italian retailer, Libiamo.

I was excited for this tasting as I’m currently obsessed with Italian whites, particularly from Sicily, and it did not disappoint!

Sicily has a variety of influences and landscapes, including vines grown on the slopes of an active volcano, Mount Etna. The three wines we tried were from across the island and were very different in style but equally delicious.

Mike’s tastings are always entertaining and insightful, so you’ll learn something new and have a great time in the process! Libiamo run monthly tastings, the next one is on 28th May exploring the wines of Alto Adige. Find out more here.

The wines

Grillo-Catarratto Giato Bianco by Centopassi
Catarratto 40% Grillo 30%
This is a high-quality organic dry white wine from North West Sicily. Aromas of citrus and blossom. This wine has good acidity but well-balanced with a beautiful long savoury, minerally finish. I could drink this forever! There is an amazing story behind the producer too, Centopassi is part of a co-operative, Libera Terra, who cultivate land and vineyards that have been confiscated from the Mafia!

£ 98.03 for a case of 6 from Libiamo

Etna Rosso DOC by Benanti
Nerello Mascalese 80% Nerello Cappuccio 20%
This is a brilliantly bright, ruby-coloured wine from North East Sicily, made with indigenous grapes grown on the slopes of Mount Etna. This incredible image from Benanti’s instagram shows just how close the vineyard is the erupting volcanco! Lots of lovely red fruits, balance out the tannins and the intensity is softened by the use of oak. It has a gorgeous earthiness to it with a deliciously long finish.

£24.27 a bottle from Libiamo

Syrah Lumà by Cantina Cellaro
This gorgeous red from North West Sicily has lots of cooked fruit; spicy plum and blackberry with hints of rosemary. It’s grown at altitude which helps maintain a freshness and not overly alcoholic at 13% - very easy to drink!

£88.09 for a case of 6 from Libiamo
