Matic Wines with Humble Grape

A great gathering with Humble Grape & Matic, live from his tractor in the Slovenian vineyards!

Matic is a young, fearless winemaker, just like his grandfather, who originally smuggled the once forbidden Kerner grape into the former Yugoslavia, risking his life. Inspired by this, Matic took to the family business but brought his own interpretation of winemaking. He says that the winemaker is just the facilitator and “the artist is the vines & the vineyard”

The two whites we tasted are called 'A Love Story in Three Acts'. The first act signifies the hills surrounding the vineyard, second is the cellar and the third is what we enjoy in the glass.

Watch this space for the top secret red variety that Matic has just finished planting! If it’s anything as good as the two whites we tried, then we’ll pre-order for 5 year's time!

What we learnt

Known as Furmint in neighbouring Hungary, where it’s most famous for its spectacular sweet wines, it was named in Slovenia when Napoleon tasted it and said “C’est bon!” subsequently adapted to ‘Šipon’.
